Hotel Review : Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel

New Zealand Cruise . 2017 . Nov 14 - 15

In recent years, Tommy and I have made more frequent use of airport hotels for our travel needs.  It was mostly a strategic move, and one where the primary objective was to cut down on that travel budget without compromising too much on convenience and comfort.

This time round, we were in Sydney to catch the cruise on Princess Cruises that would make a round trip from Sydney Harbor to New Zealand and back.

Cruise #1: Alaska

Cruise #2: Baltic

Cruise #3: New Zealand (this trip!)

As our accommodation for the cruise was on-board the Golden Princess, we only needed accommodation on the first and last days of the vacation before embarkation and after disembarkation.  The choice was clear that a hotel at the city (which could be very expensive and therefore will blow our budget) was not needed.   All we needed was a place to sleep for the night and move on to the harbor to embark on the Golden Princess.

Of course we could do this only because we had no desire to tour Sydney again, having done that a few years ago.  If this is your first time in Sydney, you may want to invest some time to visit the attractions to Sydney – our itinerary to Sydney can be a very valuable guide for you.

Excellent Location - Just next to the Airport

The Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel enjoys a most excellent location just next to the Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport Terminal 1.  Terminal 1 is where the international flights land and take off, whereas Terminals 2 and 3 caters to the domestic flights in Australia.  As Rydges themselves declared on their website, it is just 181 steps away from the check-in counter.

Indeed, though we didn’t count the number of steps, the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel was just a stone’s throw from Terminal 1.  All you need to do after clearing customs is to look towards the right where McDonald’s is, take the exit next to McDonald’s and continue your way to the right.  Cross a small road and there you’ll be at the doorstep of the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel in no time at all.

The distance between the exit at McDonald’s and the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel. It really is just a short walk.

If you are arriving via a domestic flight which either lands at Terminal 2 or 3, fret not.  The Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel provides a complimentary transfer service to and from these terminals.  You can check out the details here.

Having arrived in Sydney at 8:55pm on Scoot after enduring a 7-hour flight from Singapore, it was pure bliss to be able to step into a hotel quickly to rest for the night, and the Rydges did just that for us.  Staying within walking distance from the airport also means that we could grab a bite from the cafes and restaurants in the public area of the airport, the choices of which are many.  This is on top of the dining options that the Rydges provides via its own in-house restaurants and cafes.

Rydges King Room - Great for a Good Night's Rest

We actually checked in to the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel twice, once on our very first night in Sydney, and the second instance for our very last day in Sydney.  Our first stay here was in a Rydges King Room, which promised a view of the airport and the Sydney skyline, and which of course, came with a King bed.

The room was spacious and extremely comfortable.  With dim lightings and black-out curtains, it was designed to ensure that travelers can relax and slip into a much needed sleep quickly.

The view from the other side of the room.

The bathroom and shower facilities are located next to the entrance of the room, which was perfect for us.

The view of the airport from our King Room. Although the hotel promises views of the Sydney skyline, there’s hardly anything to be seen, unless the blur of lights faraway counts.

Day view of the airport from our room. Clear sky for those of us who enjoy plane spotting.

Rydges Superior Queen Room - Good for a Day's Rest

Our second stay here at the Rydges was in a Superior Queen Room.  It was booked as a day room – meaning we checked in to the hotel in the morning and leave by the late afternoon without staying for the night.  This arrangement was perfect for us as we had a full day to relax while waiting for our night flight back to Singapore.

There’s little difference between the King Room and the Superior Queen Room, except perhaps, for the size of the bed, and the lack of a view outside the windows, unless you count facing the carpark as a view.  But for the fact that we were only using it as a day room to relax, it was more than sufficient for our needs.

The Surroundings and Facilities

The Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel is a relatively new business, having opened its doors to guests as recent as 2017.   In terms of its surroundings, it is definitely clean, airy and exudes a modern touch.

As mentioned earlier, the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel has its own suite of in-house restaurants, which includes a Sports Bar, Blackwattle Grill and a Rooftop Bar called Cloud Nine.

The gym is available to all guests, 24 hours a day.

The hotel is also fully equipped to host conferences, events and weddings within its premises. We had a look at one event that was going on, and we must say, the setup looked pretty creative and non-conventional.

Final Verdict

We checked in to the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel twice within a 14-day period for short stays, and it was a good experience both times.  We highly recommend the Rydges Sydney Airport Hotel.
