If you love buildings and architecture, then the Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavik, Iceland will wow you, as it has for us.

We visited the Hallgrimskirkja Church on the first day of our 8 days 7 nights tour of Iceland, and to wrap things up visited this iconic structure again on our very last day, after dinner at Sjavargrillid Seafood Grill.

Hallgrimskirkja Church at early dawn.

Besides being one of the most iconic symbol of Reykavik (the next one being Harpa), Hallgrimskirkja Church is one of the tallest building in Reykjavik, something that we can attest to, because you’ll see the tops of it peeking out from a distance over other buildings. In fact, the church can be seen from as far as the Old Harbour of Reykjavik.
For that reason, it may be worthwhile to spend a little money (to be precise, ISK700 for adults and ISK100 for kids) to go to the observation tower of Hallgrimskirkja Church for a bird’s eye view of Reykjavik.

Unknown to many, the Hallgrimskirkja Church is designed and modeled after the many basalt columns that we find in Iceland, such as those we see at the Black Beach of Vik and the Snaefellsnes Penisular.

The interior of the church also houses a large (and by that we mean a 15 metres tall one) pipe organ worth seeing.

Hallgrimskirkja Church at night.  With the snow falling softly, the church emits a different feeling from the first time we saw it - something very calm and smoothing.  Hallgrimskirkja Church was the very last attraction we went to before we left Iceland for home the very next morning.
