As part of our package with the Rocky Mountaineer, we were to stay one night at Calgary before heading off to Los Angeles where we were to take the connecting flight back to Singapore. The choice of hotel at Calgary was the International Hotel and Spa Calgary.

Efficient Check-In and Service

The interior of the International Hotel and Spa Calgary was rather stylish and modern.  Amidst the cool interior, the check-in counter was in a state of frenzy when a large group of us came to check in at the same time.  There was definitely some inevitable waiting time, but we managed to get our keys and arrange for a late check-outs in less than 20 minutes.

The Suite

Well, it was more a suite than a room.  We had a International Studio Suite at the 15th storey, which was the smallest among all the classes of suites.

The suite was huge, and by far, the most spacious among all the hotels that we stayed at for this trip.   It consists of a living area which comes with a balcony, a small wet kitchen complete with dining table and a small ensuite bedroom and bathroom.

The suite was not luxurious, but it was at least comfortable and very clean.  And it gave us a lot of space to pack our luggage at this final stage of our trip.

Complimentary bottled water, gourmet coffee and a selection of teas is provided in-room, together with a small fridge and a microwave.

The suite came with complimentary wifi which worked well most of the time, and a bedside docking station for charging of electronic devices.   Other conveniences includes in-room dining and spa facilities, listing of attractions and maps for the first-time tourist in Calgary.

The bathroom is located at the living room area and is of a rather decent size.

Full suite of toiletries provided, so we need not have brought our own.

In-House Dining

There are 2 in-house restaurants within the International Hotel and Spa Calgary - one is Global where daily breakfast was served, and the other, the 4th Avenue Lounge which opens till late at night.

Room service and in-house dining is pretty important because in Calgary, shops and restaurants close early.  Unlike Vancouver city, you can be sure that you will not be able to find dinner after 8pm, as we found out for ourselves.  We tried the 4th Avenue Lounge on the one and only night that we stayed at the International Hotel and Spa Calgary and was really disappointed with the lack of service there - meaning that no one came to serve us and take our orders despite numerous attempts at getting the waitress’ attention.   We went without dinner that night...

Our stay at the International Hotel and Spa Calgary came with complimentary breakfast at Global.  In contrast to dinner, our experience at breakfast was much better, perhaps due to the fact that it was a self-service buffet, and not much service was required from the part of the hotel’s staff.

Food Selection @ Global.

Good Location

The International Hotel and Spa Calgary occupies one of the best locations in town.  It is within a short walking distance to the main attractions of the city such as Calgary Tower and the main shopping street of Stephen Avenue where the main shopping malls and departmental stores were.

What was best for us was the fact that the public buses going to the Calgary International Airport stops right outside the hotel - a convenience that was not lost on us because we had so many pieces of luggage.

Final Verdict

We had a good short stay at the International Hotel and Spa Calgary, although the service at its in-house restaurant could have been much better.  However, its excellent location makes up for this lack of service.  We will recommend this hotel.
